British No 1 Laura Robson moved into the second round of the US Open with a 7-5 6-0 victory over Lourdes Dominguez Lino.

The 19-year-old, who is playing as a seed for the first time at a grand slam, edged a hard-fought first set before dominating her Spanish opponent in the second.

The 30th seed will play France's Caroline Garcia in the next round as she attempts to improve on last year's run to the last 16.

"I love these courts and I think they suit me quite well," Robson told Sky Sports.

"I love New York and I love the atmosphere. There were so many British people on court today and that was amazing."

Robson, back in action after a wrist injury forced her out of three tournaments, had lost both her previous matches against the tricky Dominguez Lino.

She added: "I knew I had to pace myself in the rallies - stay aggressive but only go for it when I had the opportunity.

"Previously when I played her that is what I did quite badly I would say, so today I knew that I had to keep doing that and I managed to throughout the match."

Robson definitely showed signs of rust in an opening set which saw both players commit a string of unforced errors and produced seven breaks of serve.

Twice Robson trailed by a break but both times hit back straight away, and she also showed her battling qualities by saving three break points at 5-5.

Her powerful groundstrokes eventually made the difference as she edged the 12th game to take a crucial one-set lead.

In contrast it was plain sailing for the former Wimbledon junior champion in the second set, with the dispirited Dominguez Lino failing to even take a game.
