Andy Murray clinched his place in the quarter-finals of the Western & Southern Open with a 6-2 6-2 victory over Julien Benneteau.

The world No 2 required only an hour and 10 minutes to defeat the Frenchman at the Lindner Family Tennis Center.

Murray breezed through the opening set as three aces and a 75 per cent success rate on his return of serve put his 31-year-old opponent under the cosh.

Benneteau did show flashes of inspiration as the second set got under way but the Scotsman was largely wise to his range of forehand shots and steadily ground down the Frenchman's resolve.

Murray's reward is a last-eight meeting with Tomas Berdych as he strives to repeat his Cincinnati success from 2011.

Murray told atpworldtour.com: "It's good, in some ways, you want to try and get off quickly because you need to play the next day.

"But also, in 10 days' time, we're going to have to play best of five sets, so sometimes the long matches can kind of set you up for that well.

"Last week Wednesday and Thursday I played singles and doubles, so that helped a little bit with the fitness. In terms of winning this event, better to get off quick because you obviously have to play five days in a row if you want to win."
