Former US Open winner Samantha Stosur is through to the second round of the WTA Cincinnati Open with a 6-1 7-5 success over fellow Grand Slam winner Svetlana Kuznetsova.

The Australian, who was the runner up at the French Open in 2010, had suffered a dip in form recently that has seen her drop outside the top 10 in the world rankings.

However, after suffering third-round exits at Roland Garros and Wimbledon she is now on the up following success over Victoria Azarenka in in Carlsbad, California eight days ago.

Monday's test against Kuznetsova was a straight-forward affair as she needed just 66minutes to dispatch the Russian, who is 29th in the world after being hindered by injury in recent season.

Stosur helped herself to three breaks of serve while Kuznetsova never had a chance to break back as she bowed out in Ohio.

In other first-round matches wild card Lauren Davis upset No. 34 Klara Zakopalova, 7-6 (7-3) 7-6 (7-1) while 25th-ranked Simona Halep rallied to defeat Su-Wei Hsieh 6-7 (7/5) 6-1 6-2.

The No 16 seed Maria Kirilenko had to come from a set down to beat Anna Tatishvili 4-6 7-6 (7-4) 7-6 (7-4) while promising American Sloane Stephens overcame Croatian Petra Martic 6-2 3-6 6-3.
