British No 2 Heather Watson failed to reach the main draw of the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati on Sunday.

The 21-year-old exited at the qualifying stage when she went down 6-4 6-7 6-3 to Croatian-born Marina Erakovic.

Watson appeared to be on her way out in straight sets after Erakovic broke to lead 5-4 but she took it to a tie-break which she won 7-4.

The Briton then moved into a 3-1 lead in the decider only for her opponent to reel off the next five games and seal victory.
