Sam Stosur gave her hopes of lifting a second US Open title a boost by winning the Southern Californian Open in Carlsbad.

The Australian, who received a wildcard following her late decision to play this week, defeated top seed Victora Azarenka 6-2 6-3 in Sunday's final.

The win gave Stosur her first title since she won at Flushing Meadows in 2011 and also her first success against the Belarusian in nine attempts.

Stosur's ability to stave off the threat of being broken proved decisive - she saved 11 of 12 break points faced on her way to wrapping up victory in an hour and 23 minutes.

Azarenka was certainly not at her best at Omni La Costa resort and the game was summed up when, facing the first of two match points, the Belarusian hit a backhand wide - her 32nd unforced error.

"I think winning tournaments is the absolute proof that you're a good player and you're able to beat whoever you come across," Stosur said.

"I know I've only won four in my career. But I know how I'm capable of playing and doing what I can do, then I know I've got a chance. I guess this week kind of helped prove that."

Azarenka, meanwhile, has decided to withdraw from this week's high-profile Rogers Cup in Toronto after revealing she is suffering from a lower back injury.

"I'm so disappointed that I can't make it to Toronto as I added it to my schedule knowing what an important event it is," said the new world No 2, who was playing for the first time since pulling out of Wimbledon after one round through injury.

"I am sorry to all my Canadian fans and I will work hard to get healthy and back on the courts as soon as possible."
