Yvonne Meusburger: The Austrian won her first WTA title on home soil
Yvonne Meusburger delighted the home crowd after claiming her first WTA title by defeating Andrea Hlavackova of Czech Republic 7-5 6-2 at the Gastein Ladies in Austria.
After losing to Romania's Simona Halep in the Budapest final last week and to Italy's Francesca Schiavone in Bad Gastein six years ago, the 29-year-old was determined not to let the opportunity slip her by at the third time of asking.
Meusburger fought hard to edge a tight first set on the red clay against Hlavackova, who had not been beyond the quarter-finals of a WTA event before and had not won back-to-back matches this year.
Despite conceding a 4-2 lead but she broke Hlavackova again for 6-5 and wrapped up the opening set with an ace.
She broke twice more in the second against the 108th-ranked Czech to become the first Austrian winner on the tour since Tamira Paszek in Birmingham last year.
"I've come here every season and I can't believe I've won it now," said Meusburger.
The 86th-ranked player, who didn't drop a set in the tournament, received a standing ovation after collecting the top prize.
