Top seed Mona Barthel was forced to retire in her second-round match at the Nurnberger Gastein Ladies in Bad Gastein with a shoulder problem.

The German trailed 6-2 4-3 to Austrian wildcard Lisa-Maria Moser when she threw in the towel.

Italian eighth seed Karin Knapp was made to battle by Romania's Alexandra Cadantu before booking her place in the next round with a 7-6 (7/5) 4-6 6-1 success.

Czech Andrea Hlavackova was taken to three sets by Switzerland's Viktorija Golubic as well before winning 5-7 6-1 6-0.

In the first round Austria's Yvonne Meusburger crushed Bosnian qualifier Jasmina Tinjic 6-0 6-0.
