World number one Serena Williams eased past Kazakhstan's Sesil Karatantcheva in the first round of the Swedish Open.

Williams, playing for the first time since losing to Sabine Lisicki in the fourth round at Wimbledon, prevailed 6-1 6-2 in 64 minutes against the world number 131.

Although a routine victory, Williams did not have things all her own way as she was broken early in the second set, but was always in control as she improved her record for the season to 47-3.

"I'm always happy to get to the next round. It doesn't matter who you play, it's always a really good win to go on and move on, so I'm happy I made it through the match," the American stated afterwards.

Next up for the top seed is Georgia's Anna Tatishvili, who beat Belinda Bencic of Switzerland 2-6 6-4 6-4.

Third seed Klara Zakopalova needed only 48 minutes to complete a one-sided 6-1 6-1 success over home hope Ellen Allgurin.

Meanwhile, sixth seed Lesia Tsurenko outlasted Italian Anastasia Grymalska 6-3 5-7 6-1, but fourth seed Tsvetana Pironkova went down 6-1 6-3 to Venezuelan Andrea Gamiz.

Elsewhere there were wins for Romania's Alexandra Dulgheru, Richel Hogenkamp of Holland, Russia's Nina Bratchikova, Brazilian Teliana Pereira and France's Mathilde Johansson.
