Home player Daniel Brands secured a shot at Roger Federer in the second round of the German Tennis Championships after overcoming Italy's Paolo Lorenzi in straight sets on Monday.

Federer added the clay-court event in Hamburg to his schedule following a disappointing Wimbledon campaign where he was beaten in the second round by Sergiy Stakhovsky.

The Swiss star is a four-time champion at the tournament but is competing this year for the first time since 2008.

Federer looks likely to face a stern examination from big-hitting Brands who looked impressive in dispatching Lorenzi 7-5 6-3.

The German, who sent down seven aces, did not concede a single break-point on his own delivery and broke his opponent once in the first set and then twice in the second to register a convincing victory.

Tough for Tursunov

A meeting with third seed Nicolas Almagro is the prize for Brands' fellow German Tobias Kamke in the wake of his one-sided 6-3 6-0 success against Lukas Rosol, while France's fifth-seeded Benoit Paire awaits Albert Montanes after the Spaniard beat Paul-Henri Mathieu 6-4 6-4.

Dmitry Tursunov will take on eighth seed Jeremy Chardy after coming from a set down to beat Spain's Pablo Andujar in a tight encounter.

The Russian baseliner needed four big aces to force a second-set tie-break but, after coming through that, got on top of his tiring opponent in the decider to clinch a 6-7 (5/7) 7-6 (7/4) 6-2 win.

In the day's other games, Czech qualifier Jan Hajek will meet Ernests Gulbis following his 6-3 6-2 win over Lukasz Kubot, while Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut booked a showdown with compatriot Fernando Verdasco by posting a 6-3 6-2 victory over 16-year-old German Alexander Zverev.

The last match of the evening saw another German, Florian Mayer, beat Nikolay Davydenko of Russia 6-1 6-3 in just under an hour to set up a clash with seventh seed Alexandr Dolgopolov.
