Rafa Nadal: A shadow of his former self back on grass
Rafa Nadal refused to comment on the knee problems that clearly affected him during a shock straight sets defeat to Steve Darcis.
The former two-time champion looked a shadow of the man who lifted his 12th Grand Slam title in Paris earlier this month as he struggled to come to terms with a return to grass.
Nadal had taken seven months out of the game after losing in the second round to Lukas Rosol 12 months ago but had returned to be his best on clay this year.
However, Darcis exploited his lack of movement as he went through 7-6 7-6 6-4.
"This is not the right day," he said after being asked whether he was injured. "I tried my best but it was not possible for me this afternoon.
"I had my chances but I didn't make it. On grass it's difficult to adapt your game and when you don't get the chance to play before (on grass) it's tougher.
"Sometimes you lose, that's sport. Not a lot of good things happened for me today.
"I just want to congratulate Darcis, I think he played well and that's all."
