Slovakia's Daniela Hantuchova sealed a perfect preparation for Wimbledon with a straight sets victory over Donna Vekic to win the WTA Aegon Classic.

The 60th-ranked Hantuchova beat the Croatian teenager 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 in a tight Birmingham showpiece to seal a sixth career title.

But Vekic, 16, fought hard all the way, coming from a break down in the first set to force a tiebreaker where Hantuchova threw away a 5-2 lead but regained control to win 7-5.

The second set was just as tight as the first, but a break of serve at 5-4 proved decisive for Hantuchova and she sealed her first title at the Wimbledon warm-up event, having been runner-up in 2011.

"I waited a long time for this success, so it's very special, and I never thought I would ever play anyone 14 years younger than me, so that makes it even more special."

"Donna has a great future ahead of her, no doubt," said former world No 5 Hantuchova.

"I waited a long time for this success, so it's very special, and I never thought I would ever play anyone 14 years younger than me, so that makes it even more special.

"I am very motivated this year and hope to get back to where I was. To see Serena (Williams) and Francesca (Schiavone) doing well past 30 keeps us oldies going."

Vekic, who was playing in just the second WTA Tour final of her career, added: "I have such mixed emotions. I've had a great week and I am happy with that, but I can't be happy about losing this.

"But at least I wasn't nervous as I was in the final in Tashkent, and I will be back to try to win this."
