Anne Keothavong's dismal form continued as she was sent-packing from the first round of the AEGON Classic at Edgbaston in Birmingham.
The 29-year-old Londoner was beaten 7-5 6-2 by American Alison Riske who, at 167 in the world, is 44 places higher in the rankings than her British opponent.
In the opening set, which featured seven breaks of serve in all, Keothavong let slip a 3-1, 40-30 lead as Riske recovered to dominate the remainder of the contest.
The 22-year-old qualifier who lives in South Carolina broke serve twice as she opened up a 5-1 lead in the second set and wrapped up a comfortable victory in 93 minutes.
Keothavong, who received a wild card to compete, is one of five Britons in the event.
The top-two, Laura Robson and Heather Watson, qualified by right for the grass court tournament.
But there was further misery for British fans late in the day at the Priory Club as Melanie South was knocked-out by Magdalena Rybarikova, losing 6-4 6-2.
