Laura Robson bowed out of the Rome Open after going down to a straight sets defeat against World No 1 Serena Williams.

Although the 6-2 6-2 scoreline ultimately appeared rather one-sided, Robson certainly impressed in spells against the American, ending with more clean winners than her opponent.

But perhaps a more telling stat was that she also finished with more than three times as many unforced errors, while her serve also let her down at times as she offered up eight double-faults.

Robson certainly started in positive fashion as she broke Williams in the opening game of the match, but she was only fleetingly ahead as a weak forehand into the net in the next ensured Williams got back on terms.

The 15-time grand slam winner then gave herself some breathing space as she won the next three games to pull 4-1 ahead and, although Robson stopped the rot by holding serve for 4-2, Williams then reeled off two more to close out the set.

The British number was the equal of her rival at the start of the second as the first four games went with serve and then had two break-points to move 3-2 ahead.

But she was unable to take either as Williams showed her class with an ace and a fine angled forehand and it was to spark a change in momentum as Robson produced two double-faults in the next - one on game point - to rather gift her opponent a 4-2 lead.

Williams held her serve to move within one of victory and it was little surprise when she broke again to complete the job, Robson again coughing up an untimely double on match point to end the contest.
