Andy Murray: Will take on Marcel Granollers in Rome
British No 1 Andy Murray will face Marcel Granollers in the ATP Rome Masters second round after the Spaniard came through his meeting against Nikolay Davydenko.
The 35th-ranked player defeated the veteran Russian 6-3 6-4 in a tournament which is a key warm-up event ahead of the French Open.
Murray, who will move back up to world No 2 in the rankings on Monday, was sent crashing out of the Madrid Open at the quarter-final stage by Czech Tomas Berdych.
He will now hope for an improvement on his least favourite surface with Roland Garros just two weeks away now.
In the day's other games, Grigor Dimitrov continued his good form on the clay after cruising into the second round of the thanks a straight sets victory against Marcos Baghdatis.
The highly-rated Bulgarian, who dumped world No 1 Novak Djokovic out of Madrid earlier in the week, came through against the veteran Cypriot 6-3, 6-4.
Dimitrov will next face Richard Gasquet after the ninth-seeded Frenchman overcame Sam Querrey 6-2 7-6 (10-8) on Centrale.
Meanwhile, Denis Istomin upset another 21st-ranked American John Isner with a hard-fought three-set victory 5-7 7-6 (7-5) 6-3. The Uzbek star will next face sixth-seed Berdych on the red clay.
Italian hopes of a surprise victory were dashed as wild card Matteo Viola was dumped out by Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-4, 6-3. The Ukrainian could now play Wawrinka if the Swiss ace comes through his match against a qualifier.
And, South African Kevin Anderson proved too powerful for Jurgen Melzer from Austria 6-1 6-2 to set up a potential meeting against Marin Cilic.
