Stanislas Wawrinka is through to the final of the Madrid Masters after recovering from a break down in the final set to beat Tomas Berdych 6-3 4-6 6-4.

The world No 15 fought back from 2-4 down in the decider to edge past his Czech opponent who on Friday had beaten Andy Murray.

In a match dominated by serve Berdych sent down eight aces to five from his opponent but was unable to fend off a determined Wawrinka who crossed the finishing line after 115 minutes on court.

Wawrinka, who broke serve twice in the opening set, conceded the only break in the ninth game of the second, as Berdych appeared to dig himself out of trouble.

However, Wawrinka recovered his nerve to register a sixth win over Berdych in 11 meetings, and set up a final clash with clay court king Rafael Nadal on Sunday.
