Maria Sharapova: Proved too strong for Kaia Kanepi
Maria Sharapova reached the Madrid Open semi-final thanks to a 6-3 6-4 victory over Estonian Kaia Kanepi.
The Russian second seed, who has yet to drop a set at the Caja Magica, was in decent form and advanced without much trouble in one hour and 22 minutes. The win was the 499th of her career.
Sharapova, who could overtake Serena Williams at the top of the rankings should she win the title, proved too quick and powerful for Kanepi without ever having to play at her best.
She broke the world No 51 in the first and fifth games which allowed her to ease through the first set.
And, although Kanepi showed more resistance in the second, Sharapova broke again at 3-3 to move ahead before serving out with ease.
The 26-year-old also extended her winning streak on the red clay to 20 matches.
Reigning French Open champion Sharapova will next face a resurgent Serbian Ana Ivanovic in the last four after the 16th seed scored an impressive 6-3 6-1 win over Angelique Kerber.
