Rafael Nadal thrilled the home crowd as he steamrollered Russian Mikhail Youzhny in straight sets, 6-2 6-3, to advance through to the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open.

The Spanish world No 5 proved too powerful for his 30-year-old opponent, who looked exhausted from his marathon encounter against Nicolas Almagro on Wednesday night.

Nadal, a two-time champion in Madrid, used his forehand to great effect in the opening set, which flew by as Youzhny's single-handed backhand was punished time and again.

World No 31 Youzhny fought back from an early break in the second to level at 3-3, but the 11-time Grand Slam champion immediately moved up a gear to get the job done in one hour and 14 minutes.

Preparation

Nadal's game on the clay is rounding into shape nicely as he prepares to begin the defence of his French Open title later this month.

He will next face either American Tommy Haas or compatriot David Ferrer for a spot in the semi-finals.

In the day's other games, sixth-seed Tomas Berdych battled his way past South African Kevin Anderson 7-6 (5) 7-5. The Czech star will face the winner of the meeting between world No 3 Andy Murray and Frenchman Gilles Simon.

Meanwhile, Pablo Andujar advanced after his Spanish opponent Daniel Gimeno-Traver retired injured at 5-5 in the first set.
