British No 1 Laura Robson battled back from a set down against Magdalena Rybarikova to advance to the second round of the WTA Mutua Madrid Open.

Robson, who has suffered five first-round exits this season, had it all to do after losing the opening set on a tie-break to her 48th-ranked opponent from Slovakia.

But the 19-year-old world No 41 responded well and earned a 6-7 (4/7) 6-2 6-2 success to set up a second-round meeting with either Tsvetana Pironkova or Agnieszka Radwanska.

World No 7 Sara Errani made light work of Urszula Radwanska in the first round, cruising to a 6-3 6-1 victory.

The seventh seed from Italy needed just 66 minutes to see off the world No 32 from Poland and set up a second-round meeting with either Ayumi Morita or Sorana Cirstea.

German pair Julia Goerges and Sabine Lisicki breezed into round two with straightforward victories.

Goerges overcame Serbia's Bojana Jovanovski 6-4 6-1, while Lisicki toppled Sweden's Sofia Arvidsson 6-3 6-1.

In other first-round action, Alize Cornet of France edged Holland's Kiki Bertens 7-5 7-6 (10/8), Belgium's Kirsten Flipkens defeated Germany's Mona Barthel 6-4 6-1 and Spain's Lourdes Dominguez Lino got past Romania's Simona Halep 6-2 4-6 6-4.
