Caroline Wozniacki blew an early 3-0 lead on her way to crashing out of the WTA Stuttgart Open in the first round thanks to a 7-6 6-1 defeat by Carla Suarez.

The Danish former world number one powered into an early lead by winning the first three games of the match before being pegged back to a tie-breaker.

Spanish clay court expert Suarez took that breaker 8-6 after a tough struggle, and that broke the spirits of the seventh seed as Wozniacki folded in the second set.

2011 finalist Wozniacki lost on the first match point - as world number 27 Suarez moved into the second round where she will face Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan as she continues to look for her maiden WTA Tour title.

Another former world number one who enjoyed better fortunes was Jelena Jankovic, who won her first round clash with Sam Stosur 6-4 6-4 to progress to round two.

Australia's Stosur was a finalist in Stuttgart in 2010 before making the French Open final, but had no answer for an inspired Jankovic, who will now play Germany's Sabine Lisicki on Thursday.

"I knew that Sam is a very dangerous opponent, so I am happy to have beaten her," said Jankovic. "My self-confidence is coming back and every win helps."

Petra Kvitova was taken to three sets by wild-card Annika Beck, before the fifth seed emerged with a battling 7-5 6-7 6-3 victory.

"I still don't feel really good on clay, but it's getting better," said Kvitova. "It's better than it was in Katowice, but I want to improve more before Madrid.

"It's hard to keep the concentration high after the Fed Cup, but it's always fun to play with the girls."
