Ana Ivanovic was in fine form on Tuesday with a 6-3 6-2 victory over Germany's Andrea Petkovic in the first round of Stuttgart's WTA tournament.
The former world No 1, who won the French Open title in 2008, needed just 72 minutes to beat wild-card entry Petkovic.
Petkovic was playing her first match since withdrawing mid-tournament in Charleston earlier this month due to a calf injury, which in turn was just her third tournament back from a knee injury earlier in the year.
The Stuttgart crowd did not go home disappointed however as Sabine Lisicki won her opening-round match.
Lisicki, who hails from Troisdorf, was last on court and turned on the style to beat Italian Nastassja Burnett 6-3 6-4.
The only seeded player in action on Tuesday, Nadia Petrova overcame 21-year-old qualifier Dinah Pfizenmaier 7-6 (7/2) 6-4 in a tight straight-setter.
Top seed Maria Sharapova, the reigning French Open champion, and number two seed China's Li Na are in action on Thursday having been given byes for the clay-court event which serves as a warm-up for May's French Open.
Australia's Samantha Stosur, who reached the 2010 Stuttgart final, plays former world number one Jelena Jankovic of Serbia on Wednesday while fifth-seed Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic is up against wild-card Annika Beck.
