Former Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova won her first title of the season at the Dubai Championships, beating Sara Errani 6-2 1-6 6-1.

The Czech left-hander, who had not dropped a set on the way to the final, broke three times while taking the opening set.

Errani, one place higher than her opponent at seven in the world rankings, switched to serve-volley tactics in the second set and was able to level the match as errors crept into Kvitova's game.

The Italian had three break points at 1-1 in the deciding set but Kvitova escaped with a series of big serves.

And that proved to be the pivotal moment, Kvitova breaking at the next opportunity and holding for a 4-1 lead before sealing the result with an unreturnable serve.

"It was up and down, but I can say I was focused and calm, which was important after the second set," said Kvitova after clinching the 10th title of her career.

"It was important to stay in the game and to do my best and to be aggressive."

Kvitova's victory this week was achieved without the services of her coach David Kotyza who, she said, was on holiday.

"I hope he is happy," she added. "It was something special. I am here alone. Sometimes it is difficult to go on court and think about the game by myself."
