Top seed Marin Cilic was sent crashing out of the US National Indoor Tennis Championships in Memphis after being beaten 6-4 6-2 by Kei Nishikori.

The Croatian served 12 aces but was outplayed throughout the contest but the fifth seed, who completed the victory in just 72 minutes.

Nishikori faces Australian Marinko Matosevic in the semi-finals after he claimed a hard-fought defeated 6-7 (6-8) 6-2 6-4 win over seventh seed Alexandr Dolgopolov.

"It's getting better every match - little by little. I was dominating with my serve," Nishikori said.

The other semi-final sees Feliciano Lopez meet Denis Istomin after both men beat American opponents.

Wild card Jack Sock could not match Lopez, a 6-4 6-3 winner, while Uzbek Istomin saw off Russell 6-4 7-6.
