There was an upset at the US National Indoor Tennis Championships in Memphis as Sam Querrey was knocked out in the second round.

The fourth seed had looked on course for the third round as he won the opening set against Marinko Matosevic.

However the Australian responded in fine fashion to beat the home favourite 3-6 6-4 7-5.

Fellow seeds Marin Cilic and Alexandr Dolgopolov avoided shock exits, although they were taken to three sets.

Nerve

Top seed Cilic held his nerve in the tie-breaks to eventually beat Igor Sijsling 7-6 (7-2) 3-6 7-6 (9-7), while seventh-ranked Dolgopolov edged out Rhyne Williams 6-4 4-6 6-4.

Fifth seed Kei Nishikori had few problems, though, as he ended Donald Young's hopes 6-3 6-3.

Lleyton Hewitt suffered a bad day at the office as he lost 6-1 6-2 to Denis Istomin, while Michael Russell was a 6-2 6-4 victor over Lukasz Kubot.
