Defending champion Sofia Arvidsson opened the defence of her title at the US National Indoor Tennis Championships with a 6-4 6-4 victory over Jana Cepelova.
The second seed - who also lifted the trophy in Memphis back in 2006 - broke twice in each set to seal her progression at the expense of the Slovakian qualifier.
The Swede moves on to face New Zealand's Marina Erakovic, the same opponent she defeated in last year's final of the tournament. Erakovic beat Germany's Annika Beck 4-6 7-6 (8/6) 6-4 in her opening match.
Top seed Kirsten Flipkens also cleared her first hurdle, the Belgian knocking out 2007 runner-up Shahar Peer of Israel 6-2 6-2 after 66 minutes.
Next up for Flipkens will be Ukraine's Lesia Tsurenko, who saw off the challenge of American qualifier Maria Sanchez 6-2 6-4.
There was better news for two other home players, though, as Jamie Hampton and Victoria Duval both progressed to round two.
Hampton downed Spanish wild card Garbine Muguruza 6-3 6-3 thanks to five breaks of serve to book a second round date with compatriot Coco Vandeweghe.
Duval, meanwhile, battled back from a set down to defeat Sweden's Johanna Larsson 3-6 6-1 6-3. She could next face fellow American Courtney Collins, who takes on eighth seed Kristina Mladenovic from France later on Monday.
