Heather Watson: Let slip a 5-2 lead in the deciding set before taking it in a tie-break
Heather Watson battled her way past Galina Voskoboeva in the opening round of the US National Indoor Tennis Championships.
The Brit - seeded four for the tournament in Memphis - was made to work hard by her opponent from Kazakhstan, eventually triumphing 7-5 5-7 7-6 (7/4).
The world No 41 did hammer down eight aces but also served up six double faults in a topsy-turvy match that lasted three hours and 24 minutes.
Watson, who managed to save seven of the 11 break points she faced, led 5-2 in the deciding set only to be pegged back. She eventually sealed victory in a tense tie-break.
Next up for the Guernsey-born 20-year-old will be either American Melanie Oudin or Andrea Hlavackova from the Czech Republic.
In other action in the opening round, Melinda Czink also needed three sets to defeat Russian Olga Puchkova 4-6 6-3 6-3.
There were no such problems for Magdalena Rybarikova, however, as the seventh seed from Slovakia beat Stephanie Foretz Gacon 6-3 6-1.
Sixth-seeded Chanelle Scheepers crashed out, though, as she was thumped 6-2 6-1 by Coco Vandeweghe.
Vandeweghe will be joined in the second round by fellow American Lauren Davis after she recovered from a slow start to beat Ksenia Pervak 5-7 6-1 6-3.
