Colombia's Alejandro Falla is through to the second round of the ATP Tour's SAP Open, after beating Flavio Cipolla in straight sets.

The World Number 66, Falla had to save six set points in the second set to secure victory with two tie breaks 7-6, 7-6. He will now face Marinko Matosevic in the next round.

Elsewhere American Michael Russell beat fellow countrymen Donald Young, 6-3, 7-5. Russell will now meet the top seed and defending champion Milos Raonic.

Matthew Ebden of Australia secured his first win of 2013 with a 6-2, 7-5 over qualifier Rik de Voest. Xavier Malisse is awaiting him, with a chance to progress to the quarter-finals at stake.

Finally Steve Johnson overcame the big serving Ivo Karlovic, 6-7, 6-4, 7-6.
