Marin Cilic: Home success for Croatian
Croatian Marin Cilic notched his third home success by overpowering Jurgen Melzer of Austria in the final of the Zagreb Open.
The top seed, who won the indoor tournament in both 2009 and 2010, brushed aside the fourth seed 6-3 6-1 in just 67 minutes.
The world No 12 now has nine ATP Tour titles in his career collection, while Melzer was suffering his eighth defeat in 12 finals.
Cilic converted four out of 12 break points and broke early in the match for a 2-0 lead, and again to lead 5-3 in the first set.
Melzer won just one more game after that and was totally outclassed as Cilic fired down 33 winners in total.
"This final is probably the best match I have played this season," Cilic said. "This was an almost brilliant match on my part. It was tough to break Melzer in the first set, but after I did it the path to victory was open."
Melzer said: "Cilic was much better today and deserved to win in front of his own crowd."
