Third seed Jeremy Chardy fought back from a set down to claim a 4-6 6-3 6-2 win over teenage wild card Christian Garin in the second round of the VTR Open in Chile.

Chardy reached the last eight of the Australian Open last month, his best result at a Grand Slam, but looked on course for a surprise defeat when he lost the first set against his 16-year-old opponent in Vina del Mar.

But the Frenchman hit back to complete the three-set victory in one hour and 43 minutes, setting up a quarter-final clash with sixth seed Paolo Lorenzi, who eased past former world number five Tommy Robredo of Spain 6-4 6-4.

Daniel Gimeno-Traver will face top seed and fellow Spaniard Rafael Nadal in the last eight after a 6-4 6-4 win over compatriot Albert Montanes.

Nadal, meanwhile, advanced to the semi-finals of the doubles competition alongside Argentine Juan Monaco after a 6-2 7-6 (7-4) win over Guillaume Rufin and Filippo Volandri.

It was a day to forget for Volandri, who was also beaten 6-7 (5-7) 6-3 7-5 by Albert Ramos in the singles. Ramos will next face Horacio Zeballos following his surprise 6-3 6-3 win over fourth seed Pablo Andujar.
