Frenchmen Michael Llodra and Gilles Simon both progressed through to the last eight of the ATP Open Sud de France in Montpellier.

Llodra hammered down 13 aces, including two in a row to seal the match, as he upset second-seeded Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia 6-3 7-6 (7/4).

"My serve was good today and that helps on a quick surface like this."

The world number 62 rallied from 3-1 down in the second-set tie-breaker having come out on top in the opener thanks to 20 winners.

"My serve was good today and that helps on a quick surface like this," Llodra said afterwards. "There wasn't much in it, but I think I had more chances than him. I'm very happy to have won in straight sets."

Simon, meanwhile, saw off the challenge of qualifier Arnau Brugues-Davi by a 7-6 (7/5) 6-2 scoreline, despite only converting three of his 14 break-point chances against the plucky Spaniard.

The fourth seed's reward is a showdown against compatriot Benoit Paire next.

Llodra will go up against Czech Jan Hajek, who led 6-0, 4-2 against seventh-seeded Viktor Troicki when the Serbian was forced to retire.

Third seed Richard Gasquet overcame fellow Frenchman Gael Monfils 6-3 2-6 6-3 in an error-strewn match and will face another countryman Julien Benneteau next.

Sergiy Stakhovsky also advanced to the last eight by beating Tatsuma Ito of Japan 6-7 (7/4) 6-4 7-6 (7/3), booking the Ukrainian a clash with Jarkko Nieminen of Finland.
