French number one Marion Bartoli enjoyed a straight-sets win over American Christina McHale in the second round of the Open GDF Suez in Paris.

Bartoli, the third seed and beaten finalist at this event last year, prevailed 7-5 6-1. She will play unseeded German Mona Barthel in the quarter-finals.

Barthel came from a set down to oust Italian fifth seed Roberta Vinci 4-6 6-1 6-3 in her second-round match.

Second seed Petra Kvitova also made it through to the last eight, the Czech was a 7-6 (7/5) 6-3 winner against Swiss qualifier Stefanie Voegele

Elsewhere on Wednesday, sixth-seeded Czech Lucie Safarova won her first-round encounter with Spain's Lourdes Dominguez Lino 2-6 6-1 6-1.

And there were also first-round victories for Slovakia's Magdalena Rybarikova, Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands and Belgian Yanina Wickmayer.
