Alize Cornet: Three-set victory in Paris

French duo Alize Cornet and Kristina Mladenovic delighted the home crowd with victories in the first round of the Open GDF Suez in Paris on Tuesday.

Cornet beat Sweden's Sofia Arvidsson 6-3 4-6 6-0, while world number 87 Mladenovic pulled off a surprise win over seventh seed Julia Goerges of Germany, coming through 7-5 5-7 7-6 (7/4).

Fifth seed Roberta Vinci had no such problems, the Italian beating Romania's Simona Halep 6-0 6-3, while there were also straight-sets wins for Spain's Carla Suarez-Navarro and Switzerland's Stefanie Voegele.

Suarez-Navarro overcame Monica Niculescu 6-3 7-6, while Voegele battled past talented Bulgaria Tsvetana Pironkova 6-4 6-2.
