Defending champion Victoria Azarenka registered a routine win over Elena Vesnina as she progressed to quarter-finals.

Azarenka, who had been pushed all the way by Jamie Hampton in the third round, was simply too strong for Vesnina as she stormed to a 6-1 6-1 victory on Rod Laver Arena.

The only blot on the Azarenka copybook came at the start of the second set when she was broken by the world No 47 - but the response was emphatic as she rattled off six games on the bounce.

"I think my game is getting there," she said.

"With every match you build up, the top battles are starting now and it's exciting to be this far in the tournament."

Azarenka will now face Svetlana Kuznetsova after two-time grand slam champion eventually overcame the challenge of Caroline Wozniacki 6-2 2-6 7-5.

Although ranked 75 in the world after a serious knee injury hampered her last season, Kuznetsova will pose a tough test having won the titles at the US Open in 2004 and French Open in 2009.

"I'm happy with the result but still disappointed with the second set," said Kuznetsova.

"I had knee problems so I had to spend two months on crutches. I had a good pre-season and I am fresh and it is showing on the court.

"I'm happy to be in the quarters."
