Tomas Berdych continued his serene progress through the Australian Open draw with a comfortable win over Jurgen Melzer.

Berdych raced to a 6-3 6-2 6-2 victory in an hour and 49 minutes, with Melzer unable trouble the No 5 seed.

The Czech ace is yet to drop a set in this season's event following routine wins over Michael Russell and Guillaume Rufin.

And with the unseeded Kevin Anderson net up, Berdych will fancy his chances of at least matching his previous best runs in Melbourne - he has twice reached the quarter-finals.

Fourth seed David Ferrer also eased into the fourth round as he claimed a 6-4 6-2 6-3 victory over former runner-up Marcos Baghdatis on Rod Laver Arena.

The Spaniard needed a little under two hours to see off his Cypriot opponent and set up a clash with No 16 seed Kei Nishikori.
