Lleyton Hewitt booked his place in the final of the Kooyong Classic following a 6-3 6-2 success over Tomas Berdych in 88 minutes.

The former world No 1 defied his current ranking of 82 and is regarded as one of the most dangerous unseeded players at next week's Australian Open.

Berdych had won their two previous meetings on court and the Czech broke Hewitt's serve before holding for a 2-0 lead in the first set.

But with his home crowd firmly behind him, Hewitt battled for every point and forced his way back into the match, breaking to level the set at 2-2.

The veteran Australian lobbed Berdych for a break point in the eighth game and duly converted it on the way to taking the set 6-3.

Hewitt continued his dominance in the second set, breaking in the third and seventh games and eventually completing a fine success.

He will face either Juan Martin del Potro or Marcos Baghdatis in the final, while the loser of the second semi-final will meet Berdych to vie for third place.

"I feel like I can compete with pretty much anyone out there. I hit with Roger (Federer) the other day and hit the ball extremely well," said Hewitt.
