Top seed David Ferrer threw down a marker ahead of the Australian Open as he stormed into the semi-finals of the Heineken Open in Auckland.

The Spaniard needed just 52 minutes to wrap up a 6-2 6-1 victory over Lukas Lacko.

Ferrer, who will now face Gael Monfils, said: "No match is easy but I played a very good game, better than yesterday.

"I had a good feeling with my game, with my shots and yesterday it was a little surprise for me that the court was faster. But today I felt better."

Mofils secured his place in the semi-finals with a shock 3-6 7-5 6-3 victory over third seed Tommy Haas.

Fourth seed Sam Querrey is through to last four after he overcame a 6-4 7-6 (7-5) win against Jesse Levine.

Querrey's serve proved to be the difference, with the American sending down 16 aces to break the resistance of the world No 104.

Querrey will now face second-seeded Philipp Kohlschreiber, who reached the semi-finals in Auckland for the fourth time.

Kohlschreiber saw off Belgian veteran Xavier Malisse 7-6 (8-6) 6-4.
