Top seed Hsieh Su-wei was sent crashing out in the first round of the Moorilla Hobart International after she was defeated 6-2 6-7 (4-7) 7-6 (7-4) by Peng Shuai.

In a contest that lasted over two and a half hours, Taiwanese player Hsieh could win only 54 per cent of the points on her serve and was broken a total of six times.

China's Peng will play Monica Niculescu of Romania in the second round after she claimed a 6-4 6-3 win over Mandy Minella.

Sixth seed Francesca Schiavone was also dumped out after she too lost out in a final-set tie-break to Kirsten Flipkens, who claimed a 2-6 6-3 7-6 (7-3) victory.

Second seed Sorana Cirstea went a set down to lucky loser Nina Bratchikova but eventually prevailed 3-6 7-5 6-2, while No 4 seed Yaroslava Shvedova cruised past Lourdes Dominguez Lino 6-4 6-1.
