Laura Robson has been sent packing from the Hobart International, losing in the first round to Sloane Stephens of the United States.
Britain's world No 53 was beaten 6-4 7-6 (7/4) in one hour and 44 minutes by the eighth seed.
The 18-year-old from London was broken in the very first game of the match, which turned out to be the only break of the opening set.
Robson came mighty close to breaking back at 3-4 down but was unable to convert any one of her four break point opportunities - including two in a row at 15-40.
The second set was even tighter, with just two breaks - one to each player - culminating in a tie-break which Stephens dominated as she raced into a 4-0 lead.
From 1-5 down Robson won three points in a row but it all proved too much of a mountain to climb as the 19-year-old world No 38 held on.
Robson will now move on to Melbourne for the Australian Open which starts in a little over a week.
British No 1 Heather Watson withdrew from the Hobart tournament because of injury.
