Tomas Berdych: Safely into quarter-finals in Chennai
Top seed Tomas Berdych marched into the quarter-finals of the ATP Chennai Open courtesy of a straight-sets demolition of home favourite Somdev Devvarman at the Nungambakkam tennis stadium.
The Czech world No.6 proved far too strong for the Indian wildcard in his first match of 2013, coming through 6-3 6-1 in just over an hour to book a last eight date with unheralded Spaniard Roberto Agut.
"I am satisfied because I achieved the level of play I had hoped for in my first outing," Berdych said afterwards. "But it will get tougher with each round, so I am not looking too far ahead."
No.3 seed and two-time former champion Marin Cilic was forced to battle back from a set down before reaching the quarter-finals.
The Croat overcame a hesitant start to defeat Sergiy Stakhovsky of Ukraine 4-6 6-2 6-3 in an hour and 45 minutes.
"It was my first match of the season and it took time to adjust to the conditions, the court and the weather," said Cilic, who will play Benoit Paire in the last eight. "Besides, Sergiy played the first set really well.
"But it all came together in the next two sets. I was able to serve better and did not make many errors. I have worked hard during the off-season and I hope it results in something good."
Frenchman Paire swept aside Israeli Dudi Sela 6-1 6-0 in just 40 minutes while Spanish world No.80 Agut ousted Matthias Bachinger of Germany 7-6 (7/4) 6-3.
