Watson: Let down by unforced errors as she was beaten in the second round
Heather Watson crashed out of the ASB Classic in Auckland following a 6-4 3-6 6-3 defeat to Kiki Bertens in the second round.
The British No 1 paid the price for a number of unforced errors as her Dutch opponent, ranked 14 places below her, came from a set down to triumph.
Watson went into the match in confident mood after disposing of fifth seed Sorana Cirstea in round one, but could not replicate that form.
The Guernsey player converted just five of 12 break-point chances in the match and struggled with her second serve - winning just four points in the first and third sets combined.
Watson is still involved in the doubles, with her and partner Marina Erakovic through to the quarter-finals.
Meanwhile, Julia Goerges suffered a shock in her second round match against Johanna Larsson, the second seed going down 7-5 6-7 (1/7) 6-3 against the Swede.
The world number 18 lost the first set against a player 55 places beneath her in the rankings, only to appear to be back on track when she stormed through the second set tie-break to level.
However Larsson hadn't missed her chance to cause an upset, converting both of her break-point opportunities in the third to advance to a quarter-final against another German, eighth seed Mona Barthel, who beat Greece's Eleni Daniilidou 7-6 (8/6) 6-2.
There were no such problems for third seed Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium, who eased past Switzerland's Romina Oprandi 6-3 6-0 to set up a quarter-final with Kirsten Flipkens, a straight-sets winner over Pauline Parmentier.
