Laura Robson is out of the Shenzhen Open in China after losing to Monica Niculescu in the second round.

The 18-year-old Briton, who will be looking to climb into the world's top 50 this year, put in a disappointing performance in Beijing and crashed out in straight sets.

Robson was barely in the game against the Romanian, losing 6-2 6-3 in one hour and 16 minutes.

She was seeded seventh in the hard court tournament, and came into the contest ranked five places above her opponent.

World number 53 Robson will now spend the remainder of the week fine-tuning her preparations for the Australian Open which starts on January 14.

Meanwhile, Chinese number one Li Na beat Mandy Minella of Luxembourg 6-4 6-0 in her first round match.

The 2011 French Open singles title winner and top seed will now face American Julia Cohen.

This is the first ever Shenzhen Open as tennis expands in China on the back of Li's huge popularity.
