Australia made a winning start to their Hopman Cup campaign after Germany's Andrea Petkovic was forced to retire in Perth.

After Bernard Tomic had given Australia a 1-0 lead, Petkovic conceded her singles match to teenager Ashleigh Barty and left the court in tears with her right knee heavily bandaged.

Petkovic had just won the first set 6-4 but was unable to continue after calling for courtside treatment.

Her retirement meant a 3-0 clean sweep for the Aussies, as Germany had to forfeit the mixed doubles because of Petkovic's injury.

Tomic had earlier served 14 aces in his 7-6 (8/6) 3-6 7-5 victory over veteran Tommy Haas.

Haas had looked well placed to win the tie-break when he held five set points at 6-1 before Tomic reeled off seven straight points.

A forehand error at 4-3 gave Haas the only break of the second set, before the German broke again early in the third.

But Tomic levelled at 5-5 and then broke again before clinching a topsy-turvy triumph on his third match point.

It was Tomic's first competitive match win since September and admitted: "I don't know how I got out of the tie-break!"

Earlier, on Saturday, Spain beat South Africa 2-1 in the opening match in Group B.
