Mardy Fish has been ruled out of the 2013 Australian Open but hopes to return to the ATP Tour in February, his agent has revealed.

The 30-year-old American is currently recovering from a heart condition which caused him to miss large parts of the 2012 season, as well as threatening his life.

After beginning the year as world No.7, Fish, who has not played on the ATP Tour since September's US Open, has tumbled to 27 in the world as a result.

But, after undergoing surgery in May to correct a form of arrhythmia in his heart, his agent John Tobias is hopeful of a less turbulent 2013.

"The good news is that Mardy's health is improving and he is back on the court slowing getting back into his regular workouts," Tobias told Reuters.
