Tomas Berdych was delighted to finally break his 2012 losing record in London after edging out Jo-Wilfried Tsonga at the ATP World Tour Finals.

The Czech triumphed 7-5 3-6 6-1 against the seventh seed, boosting his hopes of qualifying for the semi-finals from Group A and also registering his first win in the English capital this year.

"I was trying to focus on myself and bring into my mind that the last few matches with Jo had gone my way."

Berdych had fallen at the first hurdle at both Wimbledon and the Olympics during the summer before also being beaten by Andy Murray in his opening match at the O2 Arena.

"I was even thinking about it (the losing run), which was not a good idea to do," he told Sky Sports.

"Finally I was able to break it this year and now I've a win in London. I like to play here, so I don't know why it's taken so long.

"I'm happy to have this one - I think it's quite important.

"I was trying to focus on myself and bring into my mind that the last few matches with Jo had gone my way."

Just like he did against Murray, Berdych won the opening set in impressive fashion before being pegged back by his opponent.

He looked in trouble at the start of the decider, too, facing two break points in the very first game. However he managed to fight off both before running away with the set, handing Tsonga a second straight loss in the tournament.

"I'm surprised at the score, but now how hard I had to work for it," the fifth seed added. "It wasn't a good start to the third set, but I turned it around and finished it well."
