David Ferrer will go to London next week on the crest of a wave after beating Jerzy Janowicz in the final of the Paris Masters.

The world No 5 gradually wore down the qualifier, who knocked out Andy Murray earlier in the week, to win 6-4 6-3.

Ferrer, winning a Masters Series event for the first time, lifted his seventh title of the season to take him ahead of Roger Federer.

Janowicz refused to be overawed in the biggest match of his career, holding his own at 4-4 in an even opener.

But Ferrer eventually got to his man, forging the decisive break to edge into a one set lead.

Janowicz, ranked 69, clinched an early break in the second thanks to a successful challenge, the ball landing just long after Ferrer's shot was called good.

However, the Spaniard immediately put pressure on the Pole's serve and although he saved a break point Ferrer forced a forehand error from his opponent and he was back on level terms.

Ferrer then seemed to find another gear, digging in to hold in the next game before capitalising on three break points in the sixth game - Janowicz saving the first two before double-faulting.

It proved a decisive moment as Ferrer held to love in the next, and although the qualifier broke a four-game losing streak his race was run and once again Ferrer ran through another service game to clinch the title.

It means Ferrer will head to the ATP World Tour Finals at the O2 Arena in the very best form as he cements his position in the world's elite.
