Maria Sharapova claimed top spot in the White Group at the WTA Championships after romping to a 6-0 6-3 victory against Sam Stosur in Istanbul.
Australian Stosur, who was already eliminated from the season-ending finale after back-to-back defeats, won just five points in the opening set as Sharapova, already assured of her place in the semi-finals, sped to a third successive victory.
The win increases Sharapova's dominance over Stosur to 11-2 and ensures the Russian will avoid a semi-final showdown with in-form Serena Williams.
Sharapova was denied in her quest to end the year as world No.1, though, when Victoria Azarenka, her last four opponent, beat Li Na in the final match on Friday.
World No.9 Stosur never recovered after a blistering start from Sharapova, who powered to an opening set bagel in just 20 minutes.
The Australian improved in the second but Sharapova accelerated to victory after breaking in the seventh game.
Speaking afterwards, Sharapova, who came through a three-set epic with Agnieszka Radwanska on Wednesday, said: "After a really long match in my previous round, I was just trying to be really aggressive today and not spend as much time as I did the other day.
"I knew coming in I was already going to be in the semis, but I didn't want to lose. I wanted to do the right things today and I did them."
