British pair Heather Watson and Laura Robson have both reached the quarter-finals of the HP Open in Osaka.

Watson upset sixth seed Anabel Medina Garrigues 6-7 (4-7) 6-2 6-3 before Robson joined her in the last eight with a 6-4 6-4 triumph over China's Yi Miao Zhou.

Watson has a great chance to reach the semi-finals too as her expected opponent, No 2 seed Zheng Jie, was toppled 6-3 6-3 by Pauline Parmentier of France.

The Guernsey-born teenager lost a tight first set on the tie-break but in the second she broke the experienced Spaniard and served out - saving four break points in the process - to level the match.

She then bossed the decider, grabbing an early break to put her in command before breaking once again to secure the victory.

Robson's victory over unheralded Zhou was much more straightforward and she will play Kai-Chen Chang on Friday for a place in the semi-finals.
