Janko Tipsarevic: Through to the last eight in Tokyo
Third seed Janko Tipsarevic made short work of qualifier Marco Chiudinelli to reach the quarter-finals of the Japan Open.
The Serbian needed 110 minutes to see off Chiudinelli's challenge and record a 6-4 6-2 victory.
Chiudinelli, from Switzerland, had his chances but he failed to take any of his six opportunities to break serve - whereas Tipsarevic crucially broke on three occasions.
Tipsarevic will now face sixth seed Milos Raonic after the Canadian was handed an easy route into the next round.
Raonic was leading 3-0 in the opening set against Viktor Troicki when the Serbian was forced to withdraw with an injury.
Thomas Berdych, the No 2 seed, overcame a spirited Alejandro Falla 6-3 7-5, however the fourth-ranked Juan Monaco crashed out to Marcos Baghdatis.
Monaco had looked set to survive an early scare as he levelled the match after a slow start. Baghdatis had other ideas, though, as he came out on top 7-5 1-6 6-3
There were mixed fortunes for two home players on Thursday as Kei Nishikori beat Tommy Robredo 5-7 6-1 6-0, while Tatsuma Ito went down 7-5 6-3 to Dmitry Tursunov.
