Maria Sharapova is through to the last 16 of the China Open in Beijing following a 6-2 6-2 victory over Sorana Cirstea.

The world number two made light work of the Romanian, who is ranked 29th in the WTA Standings, winning comfortably in straight sets.

Sharapova will now face Slovenian Polona Hercog in the third round. The qualifier saw off Ekaterina Makarova in three sets.

Elsewhere, there was a shock as Switzerland's Romina Oprandi beat former world number one Ana Ivanovic in straight sets.

Oprandi, who received a late entry following Serena Williams' withdrawal, defeated the eleventh seed from Serbia 6-4 6-3.

"I really struggled to find my rhythm out there today, especially on the forehand," said Ivanovic.

Ivanovic's compatriot Jelena Jankovic was also knocked out, losing to Spain's Carla Suarez Navarro 7-5 6-4.

Defending champion Agnieszka Radwanska survived a scare, coming from behind to defeat another Spaniard, Lourdes Dominguez Lino, 2-6 6-1 6-4.

Radwanska will play either Li Na or Peng Shuai in the quarter-finals.
