Marin Cilic was a surprise casualty at the China Open as the fourth-seeded Croatian lost to wild card Marius Copil.
Cilic had reached final in Beijing in 2011 but he was made to pay for a misfiring serve as Copil, ranked more than 200 places below him in the world, secured a 3-6 7-6 (7-0) 6-4 victory.
"I wasn't serving consistently well. When I had the break up in all three sets I would lose my serve," Cilic said. "I'm very disappointed."
While Cilic faltered, sixth seed Alexandr Dolgopolov, Florian Mayer and Zhang Ze all progressed with comfortable straight-set wins.
Dolgopolov recorded a 6-0 6-4 win over Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-0 6-4, Mayer wasted little time in beating Fabio Fognini 6-1 6-2, while Zhang overcame compatriot Wu Di 6-4 6-1.
Carlos Berlocq, though, survived a second-set wobble to see off Marinko Matosevic 3-6 6-2 6-3.
