Roberta Vinci had to dig deep before progressing to the second round of the WTA Rogers Cup in Montreal.

The Italian had looked to be on the brink of an early exit as she trailed Yanina Wickmayer 5-1 in the deciding set - while she faced match points in the eighth game.

However the world No.28 came storming back to clinch a 6-2 3-6 7-5 triumph.

Home favourite Aleksandra Wozniak overcame a rain delay to oust Daniela Hantuchova 7-5 7-6 (7/5).

Another Canadian looked to be on her way to the second round when Stephanie Dubois breezed through the first set against Chanelle Scheepers, but the South African hit back to win 1-6 6-3 6-0.

Carla Suarez-Navarro prevailed 1-6 6-4 6-3 in the all-Spanish battle with Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez, while Sesil Karatantcheva stunned Sorana Cirstea 6-0 6-0.

There were also first-round wins on Tuesday for Ekaterina Makarova, Ksenia Pervak, Tamira Paszek, Jana Cepelova and Simona Halep.
